The 2026/27 apprenticeship funding rules introduce some of the biggest changes to apprenticeship funding in recent years. While much of the attention has focused on employers, colleges and training providers will also need to adapt their recruitment, onboarding and compliance processes ahead of the new funding year from 1 August 2026.
What are the main apprenticeship funding changes?
The headline changes include:
- 100% government-funded training for apprentices aged 16–24 employed by non-levy (SME) employers.
- A £2,000 hiring incentive for eligible non-levy employers recruiting young apprentices from October 2026.
- New rules around employer contributions, levy funding and compliance.
- Ongoing changes to higher-level apprenticeship funding and evidence requirements.
The aim is simple: encourage more employers to recruit young apprentices while ensuring providers maintain high-quality, compliant delivery.
What do the changes mean for training providers?
If more employers choose to recruit apprentices because funding is more attractive, providers are likely to see:
- Increased enquiries from employers.
- More apprenticeship starts.
- Greater volumes of onboarding paperwork.
- Increased pressure to enrol learners quickly.
- More evidence and compliance to manage throughout the learner journey.
For many providers, the challenge won’t simply be attracting learners—it will be managing increased demand efficiently without placing additional pressure on already busy teams.
Faster onboarding will become even more important
Employers want apprentices to start quickly. Lengthy paperwork, manual forms and delayed approvals can slow the entire recruitment process.
Digital onboarding helps providers:
- Collect learner and employer information online.
- Capture electronic signatures.
- Track outstanding documentation.
- Reduce administration.
- Create a smoother experience for employers and apprentices.
This is where solutions such as eSignUp can help providers reduce the time between employer enquiry and apprentice enrolment.
Compliance remains a priority
The latest funding rules continue to reinforce the importance of maintaining accurate evidence throughout the apprenticeship lifecycle. Providers must be able to demonstrate that funding requirements have been met and that documentation is complete and auditable.
Managing this manually becomes increasingly difficult as learner numbers grow.
Using digital systems to capture, manage and monitor learner information helps reduce risk while giving staff greater visibility of each apprentice’s progress.
Preparing for growth
Whether your organisation expects a small increase in apprenticeship starts or significant growth, now is the ideal time to review the systems supporting your apprenticeship provision.
Technology should do more than digitise paperwork. It should simplify compliance, improve communication and allow staff to spend more time supporting learners and employers.
At VLE Support, our eSuite platform supports every stage of the apprenticeship journey. From digital onboarding with eSignUp, through learner management in eApprentice and eTrackr, our solutions help colleges and training providers streamline administration, maintain compliance and deliver a better experience for employers and apprentices alike.
Looking ahead
The 2026/27 apprenticeship funding rules present an opportunity for providers as well as a challenge. Those with efficient, scalable processes will be best placed to respond to increased demand while continuing to deliver high-quality apprenticeship programmes.
If you’re reviewing your apprenticeship processes ahead of the new funding year, now is the perfect time to consider whether your systems are ready.
Don’t just take our word for it…
Many colleges and training providers are already using eSignUp to simplify apprenticeship onboarding, improve compliance and reduce administration. Here’s what a couple of them had to say:
“The introduction of eSignUp has had a huge positive impact on our apprenticeship administrative processes, which were previously very labour intensive. Given our large range of apprenticeships, it can be difficult for employers to learn and retain the relevant funding information, so having this automated makes things significantly easier for all involved.”
– Eastleigh College
“eSignUp is continuously updated, ensuring we are always compliant… Support received at the beginning of the process and throughout from the team has been excellent and I would recommend eSignUp to any other Training Provider or College!”
– Northumberland County Council
